Beneath the Chihuahuan Desert and the Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico and West Texas, there are over 300 known caves beneath the surface that were formed when sulfuric acid dissolved the surrounding limestone, creating some of the largest caves in North America. Ask New Mexico RV Dealers and they will tell you Carlsbad Caverns National Park is home to 116 of these caves, which you can tour in a variety of ways. Among the self-guided tours are the Big Room and the Natural Entrance tours. Both of these tours provide basic cavern entry. Ranger-guided cave tours lead you to Kings Palace, Left Hand Tunnel, Slaughter Canyon Cave, Lower Cave, Hall of the White Giant, and Spider Cave. While visiting Carlsbad Caverns National Park, you can also take part in the Bat Flight Program. Each summer evening, nearly 400,000 Brazilian free-tail bats fly from Carlsbad Cavern. Prior to this evening flight, a ranger provides a program at the cavern entrance. Return flights pre-dawn are also incredibly impressive to see as the bats re-enter the Cavern with special dives from hundreds of feet in the air.
There are several RV campgrounds to consider for your Carlsbad Caverns National Park visit. One is Carlsbad KOA, which is open year-round, offers full hookups, 50 amp electric, and features pull through sites for RVs up to 70 feet in length. The Artesia RV Park is another nearby campground, offering full hookup sites with 30/50 amps, and provide RV back in lots. The Carlsbad RV Park & Campground offers both back in and pull through sites, as well as full hookups, and 30/50 amp electrical service. Also to consider is the Windmill RV Park & Laundry, open year round and offers 61 pull through sites, full hookups, and 30/50 amp electrical service.
